The Material Life of Forms: The Story Behind ToTeM

An in-depth summary of the ToTeM Collection; it's unique material options, forms and applications.

A form is never truly neutral. The same shape expressed in different materials produces a different object, a different feeling, and a different presence in a room. Sometimes the material does not simply clothe a form, it converses with it.

Uniquely within the Aqua Creations range, ToTeM uses an in-house developed polymer membrane through which the lamp's internal structure remains visible. The skeleton is part of the design. In silk, that same structure is felt rather than seen, present in every fold and proportion.

ToTeM is one of the few collections that exists in two entirely distinct material expressions: the precision of polymer and the generosity of silk. In hand-pleated wild Tussar, handwoven in South India and available across the full sixteen-color palette, the collection's cylindrical forms take on a second life.

The silk softens the outline of each shape, diffuses light into a warm, gentle glow, and brings an organic depth that varies subtly from piece to piece. The hand-pleated surface catches light at every fold and the wild fiber introduces a natural tonal depth that makes each piece entirely its own. Where the polymer reads as crisp and architectural, the silk is enveloping and rich — the same geometry, held in a material that responds.

To, Te, M, and Oji, each designed with architectural intention, carry that warmth across the full range. As floor lamps, they bring vertical presence and soft pooled light to a room. As pendants, the same forms suspend with architectural confidence. The arm wall lights add a further dimension: a counterweighted arm that allows the silk form to be repositioned fluidly in any direction, as sculptural in its movement as in its material.

For larger spaces, the M 1M1 extends the collection to a one-meter diameter, bringing the ToTeM language to a more commanding presence. And the ToTeM Silk Chandelier brings the full logic of the system to ceiling scale.

The spaces these pieces inhabit speak to that versatility. A full-scale outfitting of polymer To, Te, and M for the engineering headquarters of Boston Dynamics. A silk ToTeM chandelier for the historic Villa Flori on Lake Como. Signature silk pendants for The Grove, a five-star country estate in Hertfordshire. These distinct forms find their life in each environment.
