Kiek Concepts is an Amsterdam-based interior design studio founded in 2016 by Anniek de Pont-Laumans. The studio's work is centered on creating warm & inviting spaces to relax & unwind.
We sat down with the designer to discuss the fundamentals of her approach and hear about why she chose Aqua Creations lighting for her latest project.
What was the condition of the home when you received the project?
The home was purchased to be gut renovated into a modern space for a family. The building is a classic Amsterdam home from 1884 in the Fin de Siècle style.
The brief for the project was to create a cozy, urban family home. The client had previously lived in a contemporary high-rise, but felt it lacked the warmth and authenticity of an older house.
What was your inspiration for the new interior scheme?
Together with Sebastian van Maanen, who was responsible for the floorplan & layout, we created an ideal living space that maximized the potential of each room.
Following the client’s requests, we incorporated hospitable elements from hotel lobbies, restaurants and leisure spaces. Textured material selections and a warm neutral color palette combine to create a timeless family home.
What are the most important lighting factors for homeowners to consider?
There should always be a balance between architectural lighting and decorative lighting. Both are equally important, but serve completely different functions.
Wall and spotlights are the main source of illumination in a space, yet a striking floor lamp is what adds a personal touch to home.
A decorative lamp can pull a design together, become a statement piece in the room or be helpful in adding additional light for reading purposes, work and relaxing on the sofa.
Which Aqua Creations lamps did you choose and why specifically?
For the main dining room, we wanted to add a bit of color, but not design too “loud”. I really appreciate the craftsmanship of the Aqua Creations lamps and the color schemes that are available for each model.
To add a sense of playfulness, we ended up mixing different shapes, sizes and colors to create a unique chandelier over the table. We chose the Suuria, Dippa and Perlina pendant lights, and went with a Simon Says Maybe wall light to frame the foyer table.
