Our partner in Vancouver, Canada, SwitzerCultCreative, and HB Design talk about their latest project and the impactful role of Aqua’s lights in the space.
Company principals Renee Switzer and Adam Bellas from Switzer Cult Creative and designer Alex McFadyen from HB Design have kindly answered our questions about the project.
How did you get to know Aqua?
Renee & Adam, SwitzerCultCreative
The first time I saw Aqua Gallery products was at Anthony Inc. in Chicago. Anthony also represented some of the furniture lines from our showroom collections, so I attended his new showroom opening. I was so excited by the Aqua lighting in his showroom, it was the most exciting lighting I had ever seen.
Alex, HB Design
I was familiar with the brand but had not specified it prior to this project. Firstly, I was very impressed with the quality, it is such a substantial piece when you walk up to the fixture, it feels like you're looking at an art installation. I had never worked with silk on a medium like this before so it was a very fun process.
Why did you choose to work with us?
Renee & Adam, SwitzerCultCreative
The various lines we represent have to complement each other but at the same time be very distinctive in their own right. Aqua is a stand out product in our showroom that generates excellent feedback from everyone who visits.
Alex, HB Design
These clients were extremely well travelled having lived and worked all over the world. They collected some truly amazing pieces along the way with amazing stories that were integral to the design concept. They also didn't want the typical, "Vancouver Grey" design and wanted a colourful fun house to reflect their personalities and cultural backgrounds, while allowing their girls to play and really LIVE in without the fear of damaging the home.
The entire team on this project including the clients made the project extremely special, there was an amazing energy and respect by all parties involved and the relationships formed over the course of the project were amazing.
What were you looking for in terms of light?
Alex, HB Design
Colour, sculpture & scale - These were such playful clients that we chose the lighting as one of the main places to have some fun. When we looked at the living room there was such volume in the room we wanted to do something really striking there - Working with Adam at Switzer Cult creative was fantastic, he worked with us on coming up with the perfect selections for the space.
What’s the effect of including Aqua’s lights in the space?
Renee & Adam, SwitzerCultCreative
I think the Aqua lights fit in well with the overall design of the house. They have a large open living room and the Grace Mobile fixture provides statement to the space. You can actually see the fixture from outside when you pull up to the house. The Simon Says lights in the stairwell are installed in a fantastic layout, climbing up the wall and continuing on the ceiling. It looks awesome!
Alex, HB Design
Drama! The living room fixture is HUGE! it's one of the first things you see coming into the house so it's always a conversation started. Aqua’s line, the expanse of materials and colours really meshed with the family and once we presented the options they wanted to put more pieces into the space. They said if they ever built again they would want to use the line and it was one of their favourite elements in the home.
