As Old as Summer: The Origins of Stand By

How the circle became Stand By, a collection that ranges from one glowing disc to chandeliers at the scale of a room.

Summer is the season of light at its most direct: long days, warm evenings, and light that feels vivid and close. It is also the season that returns us, instinctively, to the circle: the form we have always used to draw the sun. Complete, radiant, without beginning or end.

Stand By begins with that form. Each piece is a disc of hand-pleated, hand-dyed silk stretched over a metal frame, a surface that, when lit, reveals something close to a solar phenomenon. Light radiates from the outer edges, warm and even. As the silk folds deepen toward the center, the light darkens. At the very heart of the disc sits a small mirror. A form as old as summer, as old as the sun.

The collection grew from an early commission: in 2001, Aqua Creations installed 49 Stand By discs in the Submarino Restaurant at the Oceanogràfic in Valencia, warm solar light suspended above the cool blues of one of Europe's largest aquariums. It remains one of the studio's most remembered installations.

Today, Stand By is available as pendants, wall and ceiling lights, a mobile light, and in multi-disc chandelier configurations. Suspended alone, a single disc fills a room with warm, even light. At architectural scale, the pieces compose into something more expansive, a luminous canopy that shifts gently across the day.
